Examinations & Qualifications

International standards, recognised qualifications and greater opportunities: how our programmes prepare learners for IGCSE, AS Level and A Level.

Our academic pathway

A progressive journey towards international qualifications

  1. Assessed internally. A separate external Primary Checkpoint is available at the end of Stage 6 through suitable examination arrangements. It gives diagnostic feedback and a Statement of Achievement, not a certificate.

  2. Prepares learners for IGCSE. The Lower Secondary Checkpoint, linked to the end of Stage 9, is an international benchmark, but enrolling in Foundation does not automatically enter a learner for it.

  3. An internationally recognised secondary qualification. Assessment depends on the subject and may include written papers, practicals or oral components.

  4. A step towards specialised study. It can be a standalone qualification or count towards a full A Level.

  5. Advanced subject qualifications recognised by universities worldwide. Candidates follow the full or an approved staged assessment route.

An important distinction

Internal assessment and official examinations

Internal assessments

With us

  • Subject tests and online quizzes
  • Written assignments and projects
  • Term-end examinations written online under proctoring
  • Revision and examination-preparation assessments

They monitor progress and support teaching and reporting. They are not official qualifications.

Official examinations

External

Administered through registered examination centres or approved providers under the international examination board’s requirements. Candidates are formally entered by their families through a centre, and results and certificates are issued through the board’s own processes.

How external examinations work

A clear path from preparation to certification

  1. Step 1

    Choose the qualification

Pick the level and subjects, with future plans in mind.

  2. Step 2

    Confirm availability

Check that a centre accepts entries for those subjects. Some are not open to private candidates.

  3. Step 3

    Register

The family enters the learner through a registered examination centre, by its deadlines and conditions.

  4. Step 4

    Prepare

Structured study, revision and practice of examination technique.

  5. Step 5

    Write

Sit the papers at the designated venue. Official examinations may need in-person attendance.

  6. Step 6

    Receive results

Results and certificates are issued through the centre.

Examination centres and private candidates

Bateleur Education does not register learners for external examinations. We provide online tuition and examination preparation, and enrolling with us does not include entry for official examinations.

Families enter learners themselves, usually as private candidates, through a centre that accepts them. Availability varies by location, subject and series, and families are responsible for registration, fees, venues and deadlines.

Examination fees and extra costs

Tuition fees and official examination fees are separate. Examination fees are paid to the centre or provider, who set the costs, and may include:

  • Official entry fees
  • Centre administration charges
  • Practical or oral assessment costs
  • Late registration charges
  • Travel or accommodation

Academic integrity and readiness

Achievement through knowledge, discipline and responsibility

  • Subject mastery

A thorough grasp of the syllabus.

  • Structured revision

    Consistent preparation and consolidation.

  • Examination technique

Question formats, command words and time management.

  • Independent thinking

    Applying knowledge in unfamiliar contexts.

  • Academic honesty

Honest work, punctuality and following assessment rules.

University recognition

Qualifications that support future opportunities

AS and A Level qualifications are recognised by universities in many countries, but recognition does not guarantee admission. Requirements depend on subject combinations, grades, language and each institution’s policy.

Studying in South Africa

Learners may need a matriculation exemption certificate issued through the Matriculation Board of Universities South Africa. Subject combinations, levels and grades can affect eligibility, so verify the requirements before choosing subjects.

Studying abroad

Requirements differ between countries, universities and courses. Early planning helps learners choose the right subjects.
